Friday Reading & Eating

By April 28, 201712 Comments

What Iโ€™m reading and eating this week:

Is your tween or teenager obsessed with 13 Reasons Why, the Netflix series that some argue romanticizes suicide? ย Here are some good talking points from the Jed Foundation if so. (More guidance from theย National Association of School Psychologists)

Another reason to love John Green: Hisย laptop art.

Just pre-orderedย The Dinner Party.

On my dinner line-up next week. How freaking good does that look?

From the Archives: Burrito Bowls!

Read of the Week: Who knew barbecue sauce could be so political?

Deal of the Week:ย Kindle version ofย Dinner: A Love Storyย isย $1.99 right now!

Unclear where my kitchen would go, but how cool is the concept of the Tiny Hut?

Meet the Woman Who Took Down Bill Oโ€™Reilly. Badass!

Iโ€™ll bet you can guess what Anthony Bourdain thinks of the Unicorn Frappuccino.

Letting Go of Objects Connected to Grief

How do we feel about restaurantsย banning children under 5?

Me R N.

How to Make Ice. Hahahahaha.

Not sure why this is so exciting, but Ample Hills is now available on Amazon. (I just ordered a four-pack of The Munchiesย to give out as host gifts all summer long.)

Dinner + Roz Chast + Kidโ€™s Literature = HOW THE HECK DID I NOT HEAR ABOUT THIS BOOK UNTIL NOW? (Thank you,ย Mrs. Little)

How to Build Resilient Kids, Even After a Loss

A little bit obsessing over the whole vibe of the kitchen included in this round-up.

The family menu options at Martha & Marley Spoon (the meal-kit delivery service) have doubled โ€” theyโ€™re now offering ten of their best-selling family recipes on the menu line-up each week. (We made this crazy-easyย Shrimp and Tomato Bread Saladย on Wednesday to rave reviews from all four diners; even if you donโ€™t do the delivery service, I encourage you to make the recipe.) MMS was nice enough to give DALS readers a discount code โ€” please type in DINNERLOVE30 at checkout for $30 off your first box. (Offer expires May 7.)

My instagram followers know this already, but I really loved Elizabeth Stroutโ€™s new novel, Anything is Possible.

Finally, the cartoon panels youโ€™re looking at above (โ€œHow Was School?โ€) were sketched by my Phoebe, who for every family memberโ€™s birthday features the celebrant (in this case, me!) in a comic strip or illustration. They are always so sweet and thoughtful, but this one really made my heart swell. A good reminder that just showing up is sometimes enough.

Have a great weekend.

The fact that your daughter drew you that cartoon is making my heart explode. Happy Birthday, and awesome work Phoebe. My girls are 4 and 6, and I hope that they get how much I love being with them, even on an average weekday night.

  • Avatar Katherine says:

    First: Happy Birthday!
Second: Phoebe has some serious talent!
Third: Burrito Bowls is one of my all-time DALS favorites and rivals Sunday Minestrone for the most-requested meal from my 8 and 5 year olds.

  • Avatar Mel says:

That salad reminds me of the spicy pork tenderloin salad from Melissa Clark, which is absolutely perfect for warmer weather https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1017575-spicy-thai-pork-tenderloin-salad

Ahh! That is so sweet of Phoebe! I canโ€™t tell you how many times I ask my almost 10 and 13 year-olds, โ€œHow was your day?โ€ and they have a total meltdown because of everything in the thought bubble! It is such a loaded question in our householdโ€ฆHappy Birthday!

Thank you for posting the article about Emily Steel! Bad ass is an understatement! Kudos to journalists that are tenacious in such a treacherous time!

Oh my goshโ€ฆthat piece on letting go of items attached to grief. Heart strings sufficiently tugged, eyes sufficiently moistened. Well written and timely for me. Thanks, xoxo.

  • Avatar Aubrey Hoeppner says:

That salad was awesome! I ate half the shrimp-tomato-lemon mix on top of spinach and have half for my lunch protein tomorrow.

  • Avatar RAchel says:

If you make the hangar steak salad, can you share the one you came up withโ€ฆ.mr. appleman didnโ€™t share ๐Ÿ™ Iโ€™m curious as the dressing seems more than sesame seeds and lime.
